At Pikes Lane we value the role of parents in their child’s learning to foster continued learning at home.

Our Aims:

  1. Ensure that parents are clear about what their child is expected to do.
  2. Ensure consistency of approach throughout the school.
  3. To use homework as a tool to help to continue to raise standards of attainment.
  4. Improve the quality of the learning experience offered to pupils and to extend it beyond the classroom environment.
  5. Provide opportunities for parents, children and the school to work together in partnership in relation to children’s learning.
  6. Encourage pupils and their parents to share and enjoy learning experiences.
  7. Reinforce work covered in class by providing further opportunities for the individual pupil.
  8. To practice or consolidate basic skills and knowledge, especially in Mathematics and English.
  9. Encourage children to develop the responsibility, confidence and self-discipline needed to study independently.

Reception – children will be introduced to taking reading books home on a regular basis.  Please try and read with your child every night.

Lower School – Reading books will be changed regularly.  Please try and read with your child every evening or share a story together.  Maths, English and Spelling homework will be set weekly.  This will mainly be set on Showbie. Please ensure your child is accessing their homework over the weekend.  Your child may be set a TTRockstars battle to take part in too!

Upper School – online Showbie homework will be given weekly to ensure consolidation of the week’s learning. TTRockstars battles will also be set over some weekends.  Maths, Writing and Spelling tasks will be set by the class teacher.

Homework Tasks

  • In all the above, tasks such as ‘Spellings’ will be differentiated according to the ability/stage of development of the child.
  • The children should not be set homework they do not know how to do.
  • Homework should generally provide the opportunity to reinforce or practise work already covered in class.

The Role of the Parent / Carer

  • Provide a calm and quiet, suitable place in which the child can do their homework, and pens, pencils etc., to complete the task.
  • Make it clear to pupils that they value homework, and support the school in explaining how it can help their learning.
  • Encourage pupils and praise them when they have completed their homework.
Where possible become actively involved in the homework activities of the child.
  • If parents require any help in understanding the homework sent home then please make an appointment to speak with your child’s class teacher.
